If you will be in the New Orleans area two weeks from today, I will be presenting a one hour CLE at Noon on Friday, August 24 with tips for using an iPad in your law practice. The CLE is free if you are a member of the New Orleans Bar Association. Click here for more information. We still have about a month to go before mid-September, when I expect Apple to announce the 2018 versions of the iPhone and iPad Pro, and considering that it is also the end of Summer, things are pretty slow in the land of iOS right now. But there have been a few interesting developments, and here is the news of note from the past week:
- Law professor and legal ethics expert Dane Ciolino discusses whether it violates the rules of professional conduct to use an app called Text A Lawyer which gives folks needing legal services an Uber-like experience to find a lawyer.
- In the latest episode of Brett Burney's Apps in Law podcast, Heidi Alexander, the Deputy Director of Massachusetts Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, discusses her use of Evernote. Most of the discussion concerns Evernote on a computer, but there is also some discussion of using Evernote on a mobile device.
- Burney also reviews the iPhone Field Guide by California attorney David Sparks. (I also reviewed that book earlier this year.)
- Law Technology Today asked a panel to suggest legal tech blogs, Twitter feeds, and more that are worth reading.
- In an article for Macworld, Jason Snell discusses what we are likely to see in the next iPad Pro, which I expect will be announced next month.
- William Gallaher of AppleInsider discusses useful iPhone apps when traveling: Kayak, TripIt, App in the Air, Where To, and Citymapper.
- Shawn Blanc of the Sweet Setup gives some tips for using a password manager such as 1Password other than the obvious job of storing your passwords.
- John Gruber of Daring Fireball notes that a recent Apple re-hire may indicate that Apple is still working on an Apple Car, not just software for a car made by someone else. The CarPlay screen in my Honda Accord remains one of my favorite parts of my car.
- J.D. Biersdorfer of the New York Time briefly discusses the accelerometer in an iPhone.
- Bryan Wolfe of iDownloadBlog discusses accessories for the Apple Pencil.
- Chuck La Tournous discusses, in an article for Macworld, how his Apple Watch helped him through a health crisis.
- Consumer Reports looked at the major peer-to-peer payment services and decided that Apple Pay Cash is the best.
- And finally, speaking of Apple Pay Cash, Apple created a new 15 second commercial for it, and the video is cute:
