How to redial on the iPhone

Here is a very quick tip, probably something that you already know, but if not then now you do:  the way to redial a number on the iPhone.  This was one of the dozens of tips that Ben Stevens and I discussed last month during our ABA TECHSHOW presentation.  There are two ways to redial in the Phone app.

First, you can tap the Recents tab at the bottom.  This will show you all of the people who you have recently called or who have recently called you.  Just tap a name to call.

Second, you can redial from the keypad.  You won’t see a redial button on the screen, but if you don’t type any number at all and just hit the Call button, the iPhone will present you with the last number that you dialed.  Tap the Call button a second time and the iPhone will redial that number.  Thus, two taps of the Call button get you a quick redial of the last number that you called.

  1. Thanks for that reminder. With all that the iPhone does and all that I’m required to remember day to day, it’s good to have my recollection refreshed once in a while, one at a time.

that’s technically incorrect isn’t it? the two-tap method only seems to work for the last number that you DIALED — if you call a number from the “Recents” list, then the two-tap method will still dial the last number that you DIALED
pls correct me if I’m wrong — thanks
[Jeff responds: That’s right, when I said the last number you called I meant the last number that you dialed.]

  3. What would make the last number DIALED not come up? Over time does the last one disappear? Or does it manually have to be deleted out?

  4. I have found this to be the case on any cell phone I’ve ever used, except my current iphone 5. It either pulls a number at random or currently, it doesn’t do anything at all. Have reported to apple as a bug, hoping they will address soon.

  5. I agree R Cassel, my same experience. I have the most current iPhone……the 5s AND if you hit the CALL Button twice nothing happens! Any other ideas out there???

  7. On the iphone 5, it is exactly as the writer describes:
    1) Click the green circle on the bottom with your phone image
    2) Click the button a 2nd time to confirm that’s the number you want redialed

How much more simple could that be? You need an app for that??
Also, your recent calls, which the writer describes as a 2nd redial option, usually lists numbers in history. Most people want to redial immediately the last number they just redialed (thus RE-DIAL), not a number they called perhaps 5 days ago. So to me, it follows up to Apple’s outstanding design concepts, that you go thru the simple 2 step process to redial.
I’m thinking maybe some of these commenters (Dear Katrina,) did not read the story at all!

  8. I think the ultimate goal is to have the phone to do a continuous auto redial so that you don’t have to keep redialing. It used to be that you could tell the phone to redial and you could just sit and wait until your call automatically connected. On my iPhone 5s if you dial a busy number and you allow it to run busy for 30 seconds then it will automatically ask if you want to “call back”

  9. I agree Larry…mine (Iphone 5c) works just fine when I double tap the call button…always brings up the last number recently dialed. Simple…nothing too technical …Altho I would prefer a really FAST redial button [BCuz I try to win stuff on radio stations..& doesnt seem to hang up & redial fast enuff for me, so I dont get to ever win anything…BLAH 🙁 ] & a back button at the bottom of my phone would be great too.
